What is the Glen Ogilvie School Council?
The School Council is made up mostly of parent volunteers. Our role within the school community is to help improve student achievement and to enrich the lives of students. We have many objectives, governed by the School Board, which we aim to achieve:
- To connect the school with its community
- Work to actively engage GO’s parent community
- Collaborate with the school and the community on its issues
- Focus on the best interests of all students
- Provide a forum to discuss issues related to the student’s school experience
- Identify needs of the school community and provide solutions where possible
- Operate without financial gain
We achieve this by holding regular meetings and encouraging parents to attend and to also voice their concerns, either privately or to the group. We hold different events throughout the year to engage with the students including the variety of food programs (pizza, milk, hot dog days), Hallowe’en and Spring Dances and Meet the Teacher. We also organize fundraising events throughout the year to provide contributions to the school. In the past we have supported the addition of the Kinder Playground, Smartboards and Projectors for all classrooms and this year we are focusing on a greening program for the yard.
How often do you meet?
We meet monthly for most months of the year, except in December. Meetings are held on Wednesday evenings in the school library at 7pm and usually finish by 8:30 or 9:00pm. You can find the schedule on our website.
How can I get involved?
The best way to get involved is to attend a meeting. Parent members are voted in annually at our AGM and are obliged to attend all meetings, although we all understand that things come up. By attending meetings you can provide us with valuable input. Parent members can also vote on items of discussion at the regular meetings. You can also get involved by helping with any of our ongoing programs (pizza, milk, hot dog days, and special events like dances).
